BMW M6 Convertible

If you've never experienced the fury of a V10 engine, the BMW M6 may be one of the best cars in which to do so. It can be civilized and refined when conditions demand it, or behave like an outright mad man when called upon.

Like other cars that have earned the tri-color "M" badge, the M6 is a by-product of BMW's racing efforts. The heart and soul of the M6 is its V10, an engine born out of the Formula1 specifications of the early 2000s. Hand assembled in the same shop that built the F1 engines, it's a highly advanced work of engineering designed to rev at speeds that would shred less sophisticated motors.

Redlining at 8400, the M6 makes almost all of its 400 hp at the upper end of the tachometer's range, which means you're not getting the full effect until you wind it out. The seven-speed SMG gearbox was designed in conjunction with the V10 in order to extrude maximum performance out of it. The clutch is automatic, and the shifts take place exceptionally fast, allowing the engine to continue climbing through the revs as the world goes blurry in your periphery.

Naturally, everything else about the M6 is built to handle the power its engine puts down. That means big brakes, serious wheels and tires, and a chassis equally adept at carving corners as well as taming the autobahn.

It's also a great way to enjoy the M6 in the real world. The unique cloth softtop features a rear window that doubles as a windblocker, reducing cockpit noise and wind, and making it comfortable for all four occupants. A push of the button puts the top up or down in a matter of seconds should conditions change.
