Born in an era when Formula1 was ruled by high-revving V10s, the Gallardo was launched as an everyday Lamborghini. Lighter, more compact and more civilized than the V12 Murcielago, the Gallardo still offers all the excitement of an Italian supercar in a more user-friendly package.

Not that there’s anything ordinary about driving a Gallardo – spending time in any Lamborghini is a rare pleasure few people will ever get to enjoy. The styling is 100 percent Italian, drawing inspiration from past Lamborghinis as well as jet fighters. Under the rear deck sits a five-liter V10 that makes two things you’ll remember for life: amazing power and awesome sound. Horsepower works out to 500, none too shabby for a 3100-pound sports car. But it’s the sound of those horses that will keep you awake at night. For reasons that only a physicist can explain properly, a ten-cylinder engine has a slightly off-beat rhythm, making its note unique among the hoards of V8 and V12 supercars. Wind it up to its 8400-rpm redline and introduce yourself to a shrill that will haunt your dreams.

Uncivil though the engine may sound, the chassis is designed to keep you securely planted to the road. Sticky tires and all-wheel drive put the power to asphalt and help launch the Gallardo to 60 mph in four seconds flat. A six-speed E-gear transmission handles the clutchwork while you do the shifting. Reflexive steering and superior brakes make the Gallardo a dynamic powerhouse. Of course, it’s just as happy being the center of attention on a slow boulevard cruise if you’d prefer.
