But that all changed when Land Rover – notable as purveyors of third-world military and safari trucks – abandoned the crude leaf-spring suspension for smooth-riding coils and fitted a V8 engine in place of their usual four-cylinder tractor motor, creating the world's first off-road luxury vehicle.

That was more than four decades ago, and many have tried to copy it since then, but the iconic Range Rover remains the world's most capable luxury vehicle. Power still comes from a V8, but now it's enhanced with a factory supercharger for even higher output. Making an impressive 400 hp, this Range Rover is more powerful than a Porsche 911 Carrera S. With all four wheels grabbing the pavement, it will launch itself to 60 in less than 7 seconds, and it stops just as well thanks to big Brembo brakes under its 20-inch wheels.

An automatic air suspension delivers a silky smooth ride over a variety of road conditions. Should those conditions happen to change for the worst, all it takes is a quick twist of a knob on the center console to dial in a couple extra inches of ground clearance. Full-time electronically controlled four-wheel drive constantly doles out power only to the wheels with the most traction, ensuring surefooted performance always.
